BOMA and Sustainability: Circular Concepts

In the coming weeks, we'll take you on a journey through sustainability, exploring each of the four pillars of our sustainability policy. This week's focus: Circular Concepts.

The (r)evolution from a linear to a circular economy is underway. At BOMA, we strongly believe in a circular economy where raw materials can either decompose naturally or be reused in new products of equal quality.

Circular cleaning

BOMA encourages the use of machines that consume less water and energy. With the help of machines and robots, you can clean with minimal chemicals, or even none at all! For our cleaning chemicals, we opt for innovative solutions like the Probio product line developed by Greenspeed. It was one of the first eco-friendly cleaning products on the market. The microorganisms are 100% natural and thoroughly eliminate organic dirt and grime. After use, when they are released into the environment, they actively help purify water and preserve the natural microbial balance.

We package most of our cleaning products in containers made of at least 50% recycled plastic. By offering concentrated formulas paired with a dosing system, we minimize packaging use and prevent waste from overdosing. On top of that, we are also focusing on developing tablet-based cleaners. This allows for major reductions in CO2 emissions, packaging, and storage. As a result, there's no need for return flows of empty packaging for recycling.

In terms of materials, BOMA promotes the use of microfiber products. The capillary action of microfibers makes it possible to drastically reduce the need for cleaning chemicals. These microfiber cloths also carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. BOMA is now also launching the Greenspeed Re-belle cloth. This cloth is made from 100% recycled materials and is also recyclable itself. To this end, Greenspeed will launch a pilot project in the Netherlands to collect used cloths and transform them into new raw materials. We aim to use as many recycled materials as possible for mats and other products. We've updated our selection of trash bags and added a new line made from recycled materials. In the restrooms, smart dispensers help avoid wasting even a single package, sheet of paper, or drop of soap.

Optimizing the service life of our products

Preventive maintenance and repair of machinery¿-¿ideally under a maintenance contract¿-¿can help extend the service life of your equipment. In our Flex Fleet program, machines are refurbished and either reused or sold as second-hand. BOMA has branches with retail locations. Sales days for used equipment (carts and machines) are regularly organized there. This gives individuals and other organizations the chance to buy second-hand equipment at attractive prices. The carts are modular, making them easy to disassemble, repair, and restore. The plastic parts of the BOMA Concept Car and the Greenspeed C-Shuttle are made from recycled plastic pellets, and the metal parts are coated with Rilsan®, a bio-based finish made from orange peels that helps prevent corrosion.

Recycling your old products

We also think about what happens to your products when you no longer need them. Old cleaning machines, batteries, dispensers, and carts are all recycled for you with the help of our recycling partners. That way, the raw materials in your products can have a second life.
