BOMA and Sustainability: Site management
In the coming weeks, we'll take you on a journey through sustainability, exploring each of the four pillars of our sustainability policy. This week's focus: Site management.
'Industry' is often seen as a source of greenhouse gases, waste, and even deforestation. We minimize the environmental impact of our operational sites. The aim is to minimize our ecological footprint.
Energy and water consumption
With over 300 employees, we also consume a significant amount of energy and water. Fortunately, our headquarters and distribution center are largely self-sufficient. Since 2009, the roof of BOMA Antwerp has been equipped with more than 400 solar panels, which allow us to save significantly on energy consumption. But even renewable energy needs to be used wisely! That's why we light our 10,000 m² distribution center with LED fixtures that use 85% less electricity than traditional lighting. In addition to these solar panels, we collect rainwater to use in the toilets. We want to make the most of what nature has to offer. Recently, we also installed sensor-operated faucets in the restrooms, which save 60 to 90% more water.
Waste management
All our employees also produce waste, which we aim to handle responsibly. No Bomito has a personal trash bin. Instead, they sort their waste using circular cardboard waste-sorting stations. This gives everyone a chance to move around and also encourages recycling. Thanks to this initiative, we save over 10,000 small plastic trash bags each year! The 10,000 m² warehouse also generates a large amount of waste. There, warehouse workers separate cardboard from plastic film so that these waste streams can be collected separately.
Biodiversity
If you visit the BOMA Antwerp site, you'll likely notice a lot of bees. That's because the headquarters is home to a colony of 80,000 bees! Bees are extremely important for food production and for the ecosystem. This is one of the ways we contribute to a sustainable environment.
Green space management
We've long known that greenery has a positive impact in the work environment. That's why we place plants throughout our offices. To manage the green spaces in our parking lot, we collaborate with an adapted work company that employs people who are unable to find work in traditional businesses.
